Follow up without hounding: the cadence that closes
Following up isn’t repeating “did you see my email?”. A good cadence spaces out contacts, varies the channels, and brings something new each time. Three to five useful follow-ups, spread over a few weeks, close far more sales than a perfect first message left hanging.
Silence is almost never a no
A prospect who doesn’t reply hasn’t decided to ignore you: they’re busy, your message landed at a bad time, or they simply forgot. Giving up after one send confuses silence with refusal.
Follow-up exists because the first contact rarely lands at exactly the right moment. Coming back, calmly, at the right pace, gives your offer the chances a single message never will.
Bring something new, not a reminder
The follow-up that annoys is the one that says nothing: “just checking in,” “circling back.” It applies pressure while offering nothing. The follow-up that works brings something — an example, an answer to a likely objection, a piece of information useful to the reader.
Every contact has to earn its place in the inbox. If you have nothing to add, it isn’t time to follow up yet.
Vary the channel and the spacing
Five identical emails three days apart is harassment. The same person reached by email, then by direct message, then by a call, at a pace that stretches out, is persistence. Channel and spacing change everything about how it feels.
Cible’s Co-Pilot drafts each follow-up suited to its channel, taking into account what’s already been sent. You keep a coherent thread without starting from scratch each time — and nothing goes out without your review.
Know when to stop
A cadence has an end. After a few useful follow-ups with no reply, a final message that politely closes the door often does better than all the rest: it removes the pressure and invites a reply when the time is right.
Knowing how to close also respects your time. A clear “no” beats a “maybe” you chase for six months.
A record, or the cadence falls apart
Without a memory of who received what and when, follow-up becomes guesswork: you forget some, over-contact others. When you’re the whole sales team, that tracking can’t live only in your head.
Cible keeps your research and prepared messages as documents you reopen whenever you like. The cadence stays orderly, even when you’re running fifty conversations at once.
